Koh Tao March 2013

Day 3

Today we decided we were going to visit the beautiful and nearby island of Nang Yuang. After arising at 10am we got dressed and headed to a nearby breakfast bar for some food. Consisting of passion fruit and coconut shakes, jam bagel and eggs Benedict. BBC World News was on in the background and reporting on the current financial plight in Cyprus, again adding to my list of reasons why I'm happy I'm not in the country or continent where that I information affects me.

After breakfast we headed to Sairee beach where you can easily get water taxis/long tail boats to Nang Yuang. The price is 200 baht/£4.59/$6.77 per person return and you have to tell the driver what time you want picking up from the island. After a 15 minute ride on the long tail we made it to the private island which is so private there's an admission fee of 100 baht/£2.24$3.40 per person.

There's a restaurant, bar and gift shop on the island in addition to 3 beaches however small. The island is great for relaxing but very popular for snorkelling and a as a stopover for several diving courses. There were rows and rows of deck chairs so we snapped a couple up and sat and relaxed for a bit until heading into the water. The sea was cool and quite rocky so we didn't go in too far. After a while we headed back to our deck chairs and was greeted by a man that mentioned I owed him 100 baht for the use of both deck chairs. We fell asleep in the chairs for maybe an hour then at 2:30pm decided we better get some food. The prices on the island were pretty extortionate at 150 baht/£3/$5 for most dishes which are usually 60-80 baht/£1.34-£1.79/$2-$2.80 elsewhere. We decided to split a chicken fried noodle dish for our bank balances sake then headed to the islands viewpoint. It was about a 10 minute sweaty walk up stairs and over large rocks but the view was certainly worth it. After a few pictures we headed back down which seemed like bliss and got our boat back to Sairee beach.

After a well needed shower I printed some travel documents I needed then we headed to a restaurant on the beach that served really good fish. Or at least it looked like it did. After realising I had been in southern Thailand and on islands for about 2 weeks but still yet to have fish I felt this needed to be rectified. From the selection of barracuda, snapper and tuna we settled on a barracuda, chicken noodle stir fry and steamed rice to share. I'd never had barracuda before but it was delicious and more flavoursome than other white fish I'd had.

After dinner we headed to the restaurant we had been the previous night and watched Skyfall, half way through the guys from the previous night joined us. After the film we headed to a beach party and chilled there until about 1am. On our way home we came across a pancake stand and got a sausage, onion and tomato pancake to share at 25 baht/£0.67/$0.85 each.

We made it back to our hostel, chatted for a while then fell asleep.
