San Telmo April 2013

Day 3

Today Corrie and I got the bus for the first time together. After we found the bus stop, we had to tell the bus driver where we were going and he charged us on our Subte cards accordingly. We were heading to another barrio called San Telmo which is infamous for its Sunday market which has been going since the 1800s. The bus journey was about 20 minutes and we came across the market which is ridiculously huge, I will need to come here for several weeks to see it all. The market specialises in antiques but there are also several other items including jewellery, scarfs, souvenirs, bags, food, drinks, trinkets etc. in addition to several restaurants, bars and ice cream parlours on either side of the streets.

The market is vast and goes on for about 15 blocks or about as long as Portobello Market. We didn't manage to see all of it this time but we have 9 more weeks to go so I'm sure we will be pros by then. About half way up the market we stopped for empanadas which are these little pockets of heaven that I'm in love with. For those of you that don't know it's like baked pastry with fillings inside from beef, ham and cheese, chicken, cheese and onion and sweet corn. My favourite is beef and ham and cheese and I've probably had empanadas every other day since I've been here.

We wandered further along the market, and we were getting tired so headed back to get our bus. I needed an over the shoulder bag as my other one had broken and came across one as I was leaving. Unfortunately my haggling skills were not up to par and I couldn't get a discount but still managed to snag a leather bag for ARS 250/£31/$48. We also came across a band playing at the end of the market, they were really good and had a big crowd so that was cool to watch.

We then went to find the bus stop going the other way and eventually we did and headed back to Palermo. We got back at around 5pm and jet lag hit again and I fell asleep until the early hours before my first Spanish lesson tomorrow. :D
