Gelio February 2015
My first blog post of 2015! So one of my friends Rachel found herself living in Norway at a ski resort and invited our friends Abbey and Fliss to to visit so of course we jumped at the chance. Gelio is 3 hours north of Oslo and is more of a family friendly resort, the slopes are pretty and a few black and red runs however Geilo is not as big a resort as others such as Verbier. You can get there many ways but we decided to fly to Oslo with Norwegian Air then get a train to Geilo from Oslo S Station.
Our flight was at 9:20am from London Gatwick however due to sheer bad luck our flight was delayed by 3 hours. We ended up leaving at 12:30pm for our 2 hour flight and subsequently missed our connecting train to Geilo. The train was at 3:25pm to Geilo and was the last train that day. So not only did we lose the train fare of 249 NOK/£21/$32 but now we need to figure out another way to get to Geilo. After several messages to our friend Rachel in Norway and help from the information desk at the airport we realised we needed to get a train and bus to another nearby Norwegian town where Rachel would pick us up. We got a train from the airport to a station called Lysaker to then get a bus. However we just missed the bus by 5 minutes and had to wait an hour for the next bus in -1 degrees which was just as fun as you could imagine.
To makes things easier there were no timetables or bus information around in addition to no one around to ask and even people we did ask no one seemed to know anything. So finally at 6pm the bus arrived and we were on it for an hour and got to Horrefoss. Rachel picked us up with her adorable dog B, after 9 hours travel time and not even leaving the continent we were all happy to see a familiar face and know we were in the right place. It was another 2 hour car ride to Geilo and on the way I had never seen so much snow, it was very beautiful and unlike the 1cm of snow or grey sludge which is most common to London.
We arrived at Geilo at about 10pm and after a further catch up at Rach's adorable place we settled in and went to BED! A busy day of exploring was on the cards for tomorrow.
