San Francisco December 2011

I absolutely loved and fell in love with San Francisco when I went, it reminds me a lot of New York with the tall buildings, fast paced and subway system. There are several things to see and do in San Francisco from visiting Alcatraz to Lombard Street to Fisherman's Wharf in addition to several places to go shopping, restaurants and bars.

The weather is slightly colder in winter than Southern California. In winter San Francisco is about 10-15 degrees but is equally as hot in the summer as Southern California.

One thing you have to know about San Francisco is that it is incredibly hilly, I mostly walked whilst there as I was with a local but even if you are travelling by bus or the local trams there will be some walking involved so sensible shoes are a must. When travelling by bus some bus stops are a bit conspicuous, so keep your eyes peeled.

Alcatraz was a former prison on the island in the 90s and is now a popular tourist destination in San Francisco. Ticket prices start at $28 for adults and $17 for children. I didn't get a chance to visit Alcatraz whilst I was in San Francisco but heard it is an interesting experience and will surely be visiting it next time I visit so I'll be able to give you a more detailed account then.

Golden Gate Bridge is iconic and world renowned to San Francisco and must be driven or visited whilst in the area.

Lombard Street is a street in San Francisco which is famous for its winding street. It's a one way street with 8 hairpin turns and residents amazing live on this infamous road. There is nothing like it any way else and is a must see whilst in the city.

Fisherman's Wharf is a pier located by the water in San Francisco. It is a very popular tourist destination, at the wharf there are restaurants and kiosks many offering a Northern California staple of clam chowder and sour dough bread. There are several souvenir stores and the like in the wharf.

Union Square in downtown SF is were several hotels, bars, restaurants, theatres, department stores and malls are located in addition to the subway stops. Macys, Bloomingdales, Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom are all located downtown in addition to the Westfileld Shopping Centre which houses several women and mens clothes stores and more eateries.

A good eatery I discovered whilst in SF was The Grove on 2250 Chestnut Street. It's a casual dining experience that offer breakfast, lunch and dinner. I was there for breakfast and had eggs benedict, one of my favourites. The men comprises of alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages, sandwiches, bagels, burgers, coffee, Wi-Fi and pasta. I must if you want good food, reasonably priced in a casual and fun atmosphere.
