Mykonos, May 2018

My friend Aura and I decided to venture to the island of Mykonos this summer. We took a quick 4 hour easyjet flight from Gatwick at 6am and arrived at 12pm. We were staying at the Myconian Imperial Hotel and they collected us from the airport. It was about a 30 minute drive to the hotel. As first impressions go it didn't start out well, the bell boy asked to take my luggage and when I said no he got a bit shirty and aggressive. Not what I would expect from a 5 star hotel. I ended up having to give the rude bell boy my luggage as our room wasn't ready yet. We had about an hour to kill and so we had lunch at the pool restaurant. Before that one of the staff gave us a 'tour' of the hotel in broken English. Which wasn't necessary or appreciated, the hotel wasn't that big. I think we were both capable of finding the spa and pool by ourselves. 


We proceeded to order our lunch which was a tall order as the waitress didn't seem to be able to understand either of us.  After lunch we checked into our room. The room was nice but not amazing. There was no bottled water in the room, a fridge but you couldn't put anything in it as the items in the fridge were on a timer so you couldn't move anything or you'd be charged automatically, no coffee machine/kettle, no hooks to put your towels on. On the other hand the tv was huge but the only channels in English was the news. Who needs to watch the news on holiday? That's what my phone is for. So we ended up watching films on our iPads in the evening. The maids also clean your rooms twice a day which is great for us but sucks for them. We came home at 9pm one night and they were cleaning our bathroom. It seems they never stop. 


After we settled in to our room we went to the pool and basically fell asleep in the sun. We'd both been up since 2:30am so we were both pretty tired. At about 5pm we woke up and headed back to our room. We showered and then got the free shuttle to the old town. The hotel provides shuttles 4 times a day to and from the old town. We left at 8pm and arrived at 8:30pm. We wandered and got some dinner at one of the waterfront restaurants, Raya. We both got chicken gyros which were delicious, I couldn't even finish all of mine. We then got the last shuttle back at 10:30pm.

Trdelnik We woke up at 8:45 to the sound of drilling as there were some roadworks going on outside our windows :(  Everyone got showered and dressed and we left at 10am to go to the Old Market Square, we saw the Astronomical Clock, walked around the market and had these sugary sweets called trdelnik. There were several stalls selling them. They are the most devine dessert I've ever had and the thing I miss the most about Prague. It is made out of dough and like a pretzel but with a more crispy consistency. It is made by wrapping the dough around a roll pin type device which is then rolled above hot coals to cook the dough. After it's golden brown it is then rolled in a sugar and cinnamon mix. Then you get to wat it! This has to be tried and searched for when you go to Prague as it's delicious! Buenos Aires April 2013

Today I attended my first Spanish class. I was supposed to have group classes but there is nobody else at my beginner level so I am having 1:1 classes at the moment. I currently have 2 hours of lessons per day and if I change to a group classes I will have four hours a day. It was a bit weird at the beginning, kind of like my first day of school. I was introduced to my professor Bruno and was given a textbook and a tour of the school which took no time at all. There are a few computers, wifi throughout and several leaflets with information about Buenos Aires and things to do. The first class was good and I was given homework for the next day so it really felt like I was 14 again. I continued classes for the rest of the week in addition to my own form of studying from reading Spanish books, magazines, watching telenovelas and talking to as many Argentines as possible. Ao Nang March 2013

Day 1 After spending 4 days in Bangkok which was 2 days too many I decided to venture down to Southern Thailand and the islands. We went to one of the many travel agents in the Khao San Road area and were told we had 3 options with regards to getting to Krabi (which is a good starting point to getting to the other islands). We could take a 64 person tourist bus taking 14 hours for 700 baht/£15/$23. A regular 24 person bus for 1100 baht/£24/$37 or a 32 person bus for 900 baht/£20/$30 both taking 12 hours. We decided to take the 900 baht bus as it was quicker and had more leg room than the 64 person bus. After we purchased our tickets we got a taxi to the bus station and waited to board our coach. It left at 8pm and we were scheduled to arrive in Krabi at 8am the following morning. To my surprise and delight and seats were incredibly comfy, lots of legroom and fully reclinable.
