Praha 13th April 2011

We woke up at 7am, got dressed and packed the rest of my belongings. We checked out then walked to the Hackescher Market metro and got a train to Berlin Hauptbahnhoft. We had some time before our train to Prague so got some snacks and magazines for the journey. The train arrived at around 9am, we found our seats and sat down. This train was not as nice as the one from Dusseldorf but never mind. The journey was 4 hours long and I did some crosswords and Christine read a magazine. Next I read some of my book and fell asleep for an hour, when I woke up we were still in Germany but in Dresden at that time. It was 11am so 2 1/2 hours left on the train. I stayed awake for the rest of the journey and did my crosswords from my book and Christine was reading The Help which she said was very good.

Czech Koruna
Prague was a bit of a culture shock, more so than any other European country either of us had been to. It was a bit colder in Prague at 10 degrees, the language was completely indecipherable as they have a completely different alphabet than English which was strange to see and being in the Czech Republic
also felt like being in a different time or era as so much was so old such as the buildings.

First things first: money. When going to any country which is not in the Eurozone I would recommend taking money out of the ATM when you get to the chosen country as the exchange rate is usually better and makes things in general easier or at least that was my experience. So we took out CZK3000 (€100), CZK200 is the smallest note Czech has, the rest are solely coins. Due to the exchange rate working out how much items are was very complicated and annoying at times.

There was a tram stop outside the train station so we were on the tram for about 5 minutes then walked another 5 to get to our hostel. We stayed at Prague Centre Apartments, it was more of an apartment than a hostel. We had the room to ourselves, there were 5 beds but for this accommodation you needed to pay for all the beds in the room not solely the ones you will be using like a regular hostel. This was fine for us as two of our other friends Porter and Dawn would be joining us. The hostel was €13 per night. We paid when we checked in and the woman who showed us around was very helpful and informative, in addition to our bedroom we had a living room with free internet access, free wifi, bathroom and kitchen where only we had access to. The bedroom wasn't very spacious but at that price it didn't really matter to us. Breakfast also wasn't included.

After we had settled in we went to the Old Town Square which was a 5 minute walk from our apartment. There was an easter market selling knick knacks and several food stalls. We went for lunch at U Prince which is also a hotel. The food was quite expensive for Prague but not so much in real terms. I had a massive T - Bone steak with vegetables and Christine had tortellini and dessert. I would definitely recommend going to the U Prince to eat, they have an extensive menu so you are bound to find something you like. There's an outside area, roof terrace and of course inside. Altogether the bill came to CZK 1300=€53 for a steak, pasta, dessert and 3 cocktails which I thought was quite good.

We walked around the Old Town Square and the surrounding areas where there are more restaurants, souvenir shops, jewellery stores and several bureau de changes. It was about 3.30pm now so went back to the apartment and chilled and took a nap until about 6.45pm. We relaxed a bit more then waited for our friends Porter and Dawn who's flight landed at 10.15. At about 11pm they arrived and we spoke about plans for the week then shortly after fell asleep.
